Why Is It Important To Assess What Children Learn

What children learn is contained in the brain and cannot be observed. Teachers can only assess what is observable. Therefore, teachers cannot assess what children learn. True or false?

Before an answer can be given to the topic question it is important to discuss the main ideas and clarify the meanings of the key words.

Firstly, the brain is a complex organ that creates the nervous system in human bodies. There are many different parts of the brain that works together to allow a functioning body. One of these parts is the limbic system, which is responsible for learning and memory (Given, 2002). Learning is a complex task and when completed, what has been learnt is contained in a section of the brain to be be retrieved at a given time. However, because there is a lot to learn throughout the lifespan, some activities can be easily understood, while some can be difficult to acquire due to the neural pathways and synaptic connections.

The physical output gives teachers evidence of student learning and help plan as well as improving teaching and learning strategies. People, including ourselves have no understanding about what is happening inside our own and other peoples brains. This means that teachers have to rely on visual and physical outputs from the child to assess the children skills and knowledge. However, not all learning can be displayed when the teachers would like. Every child is different in relation to acquiring knowledge or a skill and may have some reason not to show their teacher for instance, being shy or lacking
