Canada’s war on drugs has been ongoing, with many different opinions and perspectives to acknowledge. However, many of these arguments, and all the contradicting research, often seems to be established on personal morals. Based on the legislation to legalize and regulate the use of recreational marijuana starting in July 2018, the Canadian government has made a decision that benefits Canadians as a whole. The proposed federal Cannabis Act provides the necessary laws to regulate the use of recreational marijuana that overall ensures a safer approach to recreational cannabis use in Canada. Alcohol and cigarettes have both been legal for recreational use in Canada for many years, and both have proven negative health effects; is Cannabis that much worse than these already legal substances? Marijuana has proven to have many positive medical effects. Glaucoma, epileptic seizures, anxiety, the spreading of cancer, the progression of Alzheimer's, pain related to multiple sclerosis, muscle spasms, PTSD, and pain related to arthritis are some examples of medical issues that can be relieved and in some cases even healed by the use of marijuana. Smoking cigarettes can cause lung disease by damaging your airways and alveoli in your lungs. It causes most cases of lung cancer, triggers asthma attacks, and causes COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). Cigarettes have confirmed negative effects on our respiratory system, and yet they are legal. Cannabis use, although currently illegal, is not as harmful to your respiratory system as
