Students should be aware of the freedom of the press because it’s an important part of their ideas in a school environment. In a survey conducted to United States adults, 64 percent of adults agreed that students should be allowed to report on controversial issues without the approval of school administrators(1). In the case of Antonelli v Hammond, an article published for the newspaper that was withheld by the school. The students won the case, helping them be represented on campus by allowing the newspaper to be distributed to share ideas (9). Like this, free speech is an umbrella protecting everyone underneath it, and some students may misuse it. An example of this is when the lawsuit of Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier ruled against the students with school sponsored student expression being limited by schools with a valid educational reason. Even after the ruling states like Oregon have given greater freedom to student journalists, movements like the New Voices movement continue to push against censorship of students and create a voice of advocacy and representation.
