Whenever we visualize female offenders, we assume that they are handled the same way as male offenders. Studies have shown that female offenders are slightly treated differently than male offenders. Besides being treated differently, female offenders face many obstacles when they are incarcerated. Throughout these years the population of women being incarcerated has skyrocketed in significant ways. In 2005 there was a population of 202,089 women incarcerated. In 2010 there was 205,190 and in 2014 there was 215,332. It is rapidly increasing throughout the years. Although, there are more men in prison than women, the rate of growth of women is much higher than it is for men. The main two reasons why women end up in prisons are because they are involved in non- violent offenses or drug related crimes. The other reasons are; DUIs, property and robbery related crimes. In many cases some families do not take them back because they are a shame to their family and worry about what people will say or think about them. Family members might leave them alone in difficult times. This is when women feel alone and embarrassed they do not have the support from their own family. In other cases, women who are in prison might have kids and their kids feel unconnected with them, because they have been away for a long time. Their kids might feel worried about what their friends might think about their mom being in incarcerated. For example, a teenage girl might not feel comfortable talking to her mom about having a crush or about relationships, because they did not spend the sufficient time with them. These women might be hurting from the inside, because their kids might not love them or show their affection towards
