On the day of her wedding, her loving father tells her, “I am your father, I will never abandon you” (Cisneros 219). Although she is distracted at the time with her wedding activities, she comes to appreciate those words later, when she reflects on “How when a man and a woman love each other, sometimes that love sours. But a parent’s love for a child, a child for its parents, is another thing entirely” (220). Cleófilas does not have the support of family and friends during her marriage to Juan. They live in a rural town in the United States. As noted by the obstetrician’s nurse who decides to help her escape from Juan, “She [Cleófilas] hasn’t been allowed to call home or write or nothing” (Cisneros 227). In marrying Juan and moving to another town, Cleófilas has lost touch with her father, brothers, best friend, aunts, and other family friends that could have readily given her advice, financial support, and refuge from an abusive relationship.
