“A girl should be two things: who and what she wants,” this quote by Coco Chanel, seems to be fitting for the influential women of the 1920’s. Women haven’t always had a voice in history but in the 1920’s many women become more active in the areas of politics, health, entertainment, fashion, education, and science. Names like Nellie Tayloe Ross, Alice Paul, Madeleine Vionnet, Coco Chanel, Bessie Smith, Bessie Coleman, and Margaret Sanger were commonly heard, these women and many more made history during the 1920’s and may still be discussed today for the roles that they played almost a 100 years ago. After women won the right to vote in 1919 and after the ratification of that right in 1920, Paul fought to secure more empowerment rights for women. According to Biography, “In 1923, Paul introduced the first Equal Rights Amendment to Congress.” The Equal Rights Amendment would create equal justice under the law to all citizens. Paul stated, “We shall not be safe until the principle of equal rights is written into the framework of our government. “The idea of the equal rights amendment (ERA) would provide equal rights to all citizens, with no regard to sex. This amendment would protect women from sexually discrimination. The ERA was introduced in 1923 but did not pass. The Equal Rights Amendment would be debated ever year until 1972 when gathered enough support to be ratified in 35 of the 38 states that it needed. ERA has still not been added to the United States Constitution. Fashion in the 1920’s was all about Flappers. A flapper is defined by Merriam Webster as “a young woman, specifically: a young woman of the period of World War 1 and the following decade who showed freedom from conventions (as in conduct). A flapper during this time may look like a young woman with short bobbed hair, wore short skirts, and make up. The wardrobe of flapper inspired many different women during that time.
