Before the French revolution, fashion in France had come from Versailles, which was known for it’s extraordinary elegance. It was said that mademoiselle Rose Bertin would go to Versailles at night to come back to France with her new fashion designs. Women’s dresses were tight towards the upper body and below the waist they were dramatically fluffed out and wide. Men wore long robes and loose clothing that draped over their body.

During the revolution, fashion ran wild and borderline chaotic and there was no cohesion or set way of fashion. Both men and women tended to lean towards darker colors and more drab clothing because of the war times.
