Six different occupations that woman would have held at home and/or overseas during the First World War are nurses as 3000 Canadian women enlisted as nurses and these women officially served in the Canadian Armed Forces. About 1000 Canadian women served as drivers in the air force. Others volunteered to drive ambulances and take on other jobs with the Red Cross. In 1914, many women worked outside the home, but their job choices were limited to low-paying jobs, such as teaching, domestic work (providing care for children), and low-skilled factory work. When the men returned from Europe, they would take back their jobs.” After reading this quote, I disagree with it as women did enough during the war to prove they deserved to work in these previously “non-traditional” roles. Women should have been given the same amount of rights to work with these new jobs. Women should have also been given the right to receive the same amount of pay for having the same job as men did. It’s clear that equal pay was needed for women and men. It’s not fair to the women to be seen as less than men and as if they can’t do the same jobs as the men could have done. Women are usually judged by their beauty rather than by their ability, but women are as strong and courageous enough to have dealt with the working conditions as men are. Women are mainly seen as the homeworkers and men as the hard workers in the family. I believe that women and men could have shared the job of taking care of the family and staying at home, and the job of working in munition factories. Also, women risked everything while working with the fumes and many got ill or even died while helping to create the munitions. They should have still been able to do the same job and men should not have returned from Europe and expect to take back their jobs as if women did nothing to help. Women proved that they deserved to work with “non-traditional” jobs if that was what they wanted to do. Since they sacrificed their health and families while working in the factories and that should have been seen as honourable. Women had clearly taken on what were considered men's jobs and performed them effectively during the war. Women can be as productive and skilled as men are and should not have been taken for granted when the men came back, making it seem as if women can not continue to do the same job. In addition, women should have been given the same amount of respect when working as employers should work together no matter what
