During the Woman’s Suffrage movement of the 1800’s, women were looked as inanimate objects while men were men were looked upon as the superior: “imagine living in a world where there is no domination, where females and males are not alike or even always equal” (hooks, x). Women were supposed to follow the rules and be a True Woman. True Women are women who have “piety, purity, submissiveness and domesticity” (Welter, 152). It is said that they must have those characteristics in order to be happy. During this suffrage movement, women were not supposed to have an education and if they did, it was said to get in the way of being less than a True Woman. In the 1830’s, getting married was compared to slavery, “slavery was really no worse than marriage” (Davis, 34). Feminists were supposedly crazy women against men and even some women thought this. It is not a bunch of crazed women in the pursuit of trying to destroy the male race. Women were supposed to be the ideal “suburban housewife or American housewife” (Friedan), those who cook, clean and take care of the children and of course, the husband. Friedan also stated, “a century earlier, women had fought for higher education; now girls went to college to get a husband”
