Being raised with family members who were or are in the military is a unique experience. Describe how your upbringing with military influences in your family has shaped your development as a student, a member of your community, and the establishment of your life goals.

Walking towards Cairo’s Tahrir Square, I passed a burned-out car whose smoking tires gave off an acrid scent that stung my nose. A group of young men marched past me — “Al-shaab yureed isqat al-nizam!” they yelled, “the people want the fall of the regime!” As military jets buzzed the city, I spoke with demonstrators who predicted a new age of freedom for their homeland. Watching the fight against oppression in Egypt intensified my desire to work for greater freedom, prosperity, and security in the United States and around the world.

It was my parents, who served as a model for my life and my dream to serve my country. Growing up, my parents—both of whom served in the military—told me hundreds of stories about their experiences defending their country. Their stories about working in Europe, South Korea, and other nations awed me and their dedication to their country inspired me. The way my parents raised me played a profound role in my current career trajectory. Under their tutelage I developed the discipline and drive to succeed; within me, they kindled the same discipline and drive they used to inspire in their soldiers. Moreover, as members of the military, they were incredibly conscious of the importance of giving back. They made sure that I also understood the value of altruism.
