The most logical way to improve the general welfare of Africa and its citizens is to improve maternal health, reducing deaths caused by preventable diseases, and eradicating diseases like polio that can be prevented by vaccinations and medication. Increases in the maternal health of mothers and children during childbirth will have the most far reaching effects above all and will transform the continent for the better. Childbirth can be dangerous and deadly without proper health care and trained professionals. However, improvements have been made that reduces the number of women who die during childbirth by staggering numbers and has improved the welfare of the women all over the continent. “In the same period, the number of women who die each year due to complications during pregnancy and childbirth has gone from more than half a million to under 300,000”(Preventable Deaths). Deaths during childbirth have decreased as a result of improved health care and improved maternal health of women across the continent. Due to improvement in health care, women mortality has been greatly reduced, which is a large step towards a better future, and this work in healthcare for women has prevented more deaths overall than improved transportation and logistic systems combined.“In countries around the world, more and more mothers are giving birth in …show more content…
This problem has caused million of deaths in Africa and has seriously hindered development of the continent due to the future generation dying before they can make a difference. “Four out of every five deaths of children under the age of five occur in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia many are newborn babies whose deaths could have been prevented with simple, inexpensive solutions”(WHO). Many children die in Africa due to diseases that could have been prevented with medicine or vaccinations. Actions taken by the United Nations and countries all around the world have tried to reduce the number of deaths in these regions and due to improvements in health care this has allowed more people to survive while education and sanitation lack. “In 1990, one in 10 children died before age five. Today, that figure has dropped to one in 20”(WHO). These accomplishments have lead to more and more children surviving their childhood due to vaccinations, access to medicine, and additional healthcare facilities are currently being built across the continent. Advances in health care have allowed more children to survive and while improved transportation and education is important, it has not helped as much as healthcare has. Due to actions taken by the United Nations and other organizations more children are saved
