Zero Rejects. Every child with a disability has the right to an education. The “Child Find Mandate” requires that all children with disabilities be identified and evaluated to determine if they need special education services. This applies to all children who have all levels of disabilities. It also applies to those at risk for a disability. There are two things that must be met to be eligible. The student must be determined to have a disability and because of the disability the student needs special education services. Some of these disabilities include: Deaf-Blind, Deafness, Hearing Impaired Mental Retardation, Multiple Disabilities, Orthopedic Impairments, and many more.
2. Protection in Evaluation. IDEA has many guidelines relating to evaluation. An evaluation is required within 60 days, or within a state’s stablished time frame. This is contingent on receiving the parents’ consent. The evaluation must determine the students’ educational needs. While assessing the student use a variety of assessment tools and strategies. You must determine the content needed for the IEP, including how the student will be involved in the general education curriculum. The evaluation also cannot be a single measure or assessment.

Free, Appropriate, Public Education (FAPE). Under FAPE, education must be a free service provided to all children with disabilities. This cost is paid by the public, not the parents. These children can be between the ages of 3 and 21. The idea of IDEA is to require that the school levels the playing field so that students with disabilities are not left behind.
