Many are responsible for the safeguarding of children; the police, health visitors, family, friends, childminders, nurseries, schools, GPs, hospitals and any staff involved with extracurricular activities. All of these people and organisations that come into contact with children are responsible in recognising and reporting any cause for concern. They can do this by sharing any concerns they have on the common assessment framework. The highest profile case is that of Victoria Climbie who died in 2000 due to failures from organisations.
• Victoria was sent to the UK to live with her great aunt. Her parents wanted her to have a better life.
• In July 1999, 18 months after arriving to live with her Aunt, Victoria was seen by a consultant paediatrician and child protection doctor. Victoria had cuts and bruises. They were thought to be self-inflicted due to having scabies.
• In August 1999 a child protection officer cancelled a home visit due to Victoria having scabies.
• Victoria’s Aunt pored boiling water over her head in August 1999 and said this was because of the scabies. Other injuries were again told to be self-inflicted. After spending two weeks in hospital Victoria went back to her Aunts.
• In November 1999 Victoria made allegations of a sexual nature towards her Aunts partner. This allegation was withdrawn the following day. The police sent a letter which was ignored, and no further action was
