From the supreme court decision of Roe vs. Wade in 1973, and the women’s liberation movement, there has been a strong belief in the last forty years that it is the woman’s right to choose whether or not she should be able to terminate her pregnancy. However, the two number one reasons women choose to have an abortion is because of either their financial situation or they don’t feel responsible enough to have a child (Ingram). Likewise, less than one percent of abortions are for reasons such as rape, incest,or the mother’s life being at risk (“Abortions In America”). It is evident that abortion seems to be the easy way out of a tough situation when the majority of people are responsible for becoming pregnant, and then punishing the child for their actions. In women with a past abortion, the risk of ectopic pregnancy becomes twice as high; ectopic pregnancies take place when the embryo is formed outside of the uterus or fallopian tube, resulting in organ damage as the baby continues to grow (Alcorn). Furthermore, the risk of pelvic and ovarian cancer increases with abortion, however, with every abortion, a woman increases her chance of breast cancer by a minimum of fifty percent, but a maximum of three hundred percent.
