Christine, a 35-year old woman, was referred by Children’s Aid Society (CAS) for addiction counseling due to an incident in her home that resulted in police involvement. As a mental health service provider at SEARCH Community Health Services, I was able to secure addiction services for her through our in-kind service provider from Addiction Services of Thames Valley (ADSTV) as well as ensure that she receive wraparound services and referrals if necessary. During the intake call, I was able to establish from Christine's self-report that she was married to Mike for over 12 years. She had 2 children; Jared aged 11 and Keshia aged 8. She reported when the police were called to her home, neighbors had overheard arguing whilst they were both intoxicated. She reported barriers to attending her appointments were related to childcare and transportation. Christine had missed several scheduled appointments prior to attending her first appointment. She lived in a small rural village, did not drive and addiction counseling support was being offered in Strathroy. Christine was receiving counselling for issues related to abuse at Women's Rural Resource Centre (WRRC) in Strathroy and they arranged transportation to her appointments. CAS required Christine abstain from all alcohol use, however she was hoping to be able to drink socially. She shared that she did not feel her alcohol use impacted her parenting as she always put her children first. She reported additional goals to include gaining full-time employment, as the abuse would end if she was contributing financially. Counselling at WRRC was helping her deal with the abuse and she self-referred when she noticed her son exhibiting abusive behaviors similar to those of his father. The salient factors that contributed to this issue are layered and inter-related. Christine is in her thirties, a developmental area where women with children experience pressure related to advancing careers and women that have developed careers, often face pressure related to having children.
Familial factors are involved as Christine reported that Mike's father was abusive towards his mother. Christine recognized the early warning signs when her son Jared starting to exhibit similar behavior. There is often learned behavior related to abusive behaviors and additionally genetically Jared was at risk of exhibiting abusive behaviors. Christine disclosed a history of past abuse with previous boyfriend, including sexual assaults that occurred when she was aged 3 and 15. She reported witnessing domestic violence as a child as her father abused alcohol daily and was abusive with her mother as well as with Christine. This demonstrates the effect of the environment in contributing to the presenting issue as Christine shared that her alcohol use started after her second sexual assault at age 15.
