I chose to read the article “The Age of the Vikings” and I was pleased with my decision on this particular reading because I learned a great deal of information on Vikings I never knew. Before reviewing the article my aspect on Vikings was what little knowledge I had gained in school and from different movies I have seen over the years. My understanding on Vikings had me predicting they were only fierce warriors, but after reading the article I further grasped my awareness that there was much more to them than what I had learned. The article discusses norsemen to be much more than barbarous warriors. “The Norse proved themselves to be colonizers, city-builders, law-givers, architects, explorers, and merchants.” The late-eighth century to the 11th century was known to be the Viking Age and the norse and vikings raided the seas, assembled kingdoms, and lead through their time. They were humans of great clout, ingenuity, and abilities. The reading reveals their craftsmanship on ship building and the paradox burials of their people. My assumption on burials on Vikings were thought to be nothing less than a cremation or an in ground burial for this was a relentless age, but the reading steers me to be wrong. …show more content…
In one burial discussed the “Oseberg” grave that was known to be for a high-ranking women there were many fine wooden objects discovered which at the time viking artwork was only known to be done with metal and much smaller than the wooden objects found the article later states “The woodcarvings prove that some Vikings were as handy with chisel and knife as with sword and spear.” This helps justify the argument that Vikings were much more than savages and cared for their
