During the period of the fourth century a great leader came to the throne, just two years after his father defeated the Greeks in 338 B.C.E. Alexander of Macedonia lived from 356-323 B.C.E. At the end of his reign, the Hellenistic Age began (323-30B.C.E.). Alexander was only 20 years old when he took the throne of Macedonia. An educated man he was a student of Aristotle a great philosopher and after thirteen short years he was known as a military genius. He later became known as Alexander the Great, Conquering many cities. At the age of thirty-two his life and time in power was cut short by malaria. Splitting his empire into three segments; Ptolemy dynasty governed Egypt. Seleucid rulers took leadership of Persia. The family of the One-Eyed governed Macedonia-Greece. Before reading the chapters assigned I knew very little, if anything, about the leader Alexander of Macedonia. I was intrigued to read more and understand if “Alexander the Great” and Alexander of Macedonia were in fact the same person.

Some cities were prior settlements renamed by Alexander. Some names still remain or at least known by their “Alexandria” names. Alexandria, Egypt one of the most famous of all the Alexandria’s and is still a major city today with a population of over 4 million people. The new city was built on the site of the pre-existing city of Rhacotis. within a century, it was the largest city in the world. Alexandria Arachosia is todays modern day Kandahar. It is the second-largest city in Afghanistan. The name ‘Kandahar’ derives from ‘Alexandria’ meaning Iskandariya. Today, Kandahar is known primarily as one of the major battlegrounds of the War in Afghanistan. Other names were Alexandria Caucasiana, Alexandria Eschate, Alexandria Oxiana and the list goes
