“Russian weightlifters in the 1954 world weight lifting competition introduced anabolic steroids to international athletic competition. This practice was widely adopted, including by American coaches, and by the 1964 Olympics, the practice was widespread (Kiesbye, 21). This spread to many other teams, including women’s teams, such as the East German women’s swim team who in the late 1900’s was dominating due to injections. As years went on, anabolic steroids became more popular and spread to all different sports. One sport that commonly uses steroids, is football players. “The 1963 Chargers, known as football's first steroid team, romped to an 11-3 record and won the AFL championship with a dominant 51-10 victory over the Boston Patriots (Vice Sports). This was due to the San Diego Chargers being the first to hire a strength coach, that was giving the players steroid pills, without informing them that they were steroids. Alvin Roy, the strength coach, told the players he wanted to assimilate more protein and had the men lifting weights while taking these pills. This led to the player’s performance to improve, but the use of anabolic steroids is highly considered cheating. Over the years, even though the drug is known to be illegal to use for enhancement of athletic performance, players continue to use it.
