The first emotions you see in this story is the caring love of a wife. She is six months pregnant. Mary is waiting for her husband Patrick to come home. But the author specifically notes that her mouth and eyes ( page 1 )“have a new calm look, seem larger and darker than before.” Why note this out? The author is showing that she isn’t actually calm, it’s a new look for her face to seem calm. She loves her husband so much she can’t wait until he comes home. After her husband comes home, she gives him a drink (alcohol ). After she talks, she invites him for some food. The detective starts acting strange, he gulps down an entire drink and tells her to sit down. The climax of the text, she feels like she was left alone so, (page 2)“In fact, it would be a relief.” she wouldn’t have to deal with the man who deserted her child. Coming back from the store, the reality of the situation came. The one to take care of the baby, to pay the bills, the kid’s father is dead. She covered it up for her, but also for the little guy who was going to be born shortly. So all the rash decisions made could be linked to the love for the child, whether it was shown to its fullest extent or not the baby was a driving force in her emotions. The story could have existed without the baby, but it needed that element of something more, some driving force something a true parent can feel, something that drives their life.
