Jackson was a clerk for two years, coping legal documents, running errands, and reading law books. When Jackson was 21, he was arranged prosecuting attorney in the western district of North Carolina, an area now part of Tennessee. He moved to settlement of Nashville in 1788 and became a wealthy landowner from the money he gained from a thriving private practice.

Jackson had to fight with the Tennesse militia against Creek Indians who had used the war as an opportunity to attack the southern territory. Although Jackson lacked military training and experience, Jackson soon became an excellent general. His leadership qualities emerged and he was highly regarded by other soldiers who gave him the nickname “Old Hickory” as a sign of respect. After leading spectacular victory over a British invasion of New Orleans, Louisana, in 1815, Andrew Jackson was a popular military hero.
