In 1832, South Carolina voted to nullify the new tariffs passed by Congress. When the state threatened to use force against the government claiming that the tariffs did not apply to them, Jackson came back with “putting federal troops into South Carolina” (Stuff 239). Through this Jackson showed the states that they shall not disobey him and the federal government’s passed laws. He kept the Union in one piece by showing his power to South Carolina, through this he gained respect from other states through the fear they had of him.

General, at the time, Jackson fought the British military many times down South. He was very popular for when he protected New Orleans from the attack British force. “To the amazement of the world, Jackson’s army handed the British attackers” (http://thehermitage.com/learn/andrew-jackson/general/war-hero/ 1). This quote describes what most people thought after Jackson defended the full scale attack the British had launched on him. After he had defeated the British force, he decided to expand downwards into Florida. He made the decision to move, so the troops and Jackson headed South to take control. Jackson once again had great success in his decision, the United States took Florida. The great success he had as a General later influenced his success as a President of the United
