Both of these characters had varying speaking skills and after Caesar died, they gave speeches that demonstrated their persuasive abilities. Brutus spoke first, and his speech was short and direct. He tried to appeal to the common people’s logic by telling only the truth and he hoped that his facts would state why Caesar shouldn’t have been killed. Mark Antony’s speech was more emotional. He tried to persuade the people that Caesar shouldn’t have been killed by deceiving them. He wept over Caesar’s dead body and, by doing this, he turned the common people against Brutus. When Mark Antony deceived the common people, he revealed to readers that he is not a very honorable man. If he had to gain respect from the people by lying, he did not deserve honor. Brutus, on the other hand, was the most honorable man in the play. He showed honor by telling the truth even if it caused a disturbance in the crowd. Brutus also stated that he would rather die than live without honor. Brutus was an intelligent man for telling the truth instead of misleading the people. He knew that people respond better to leaders who are trustworthy, instead of leaders who are devious. Mark Antony was an intelligent man as well. Mark Antony was a close ally of Caesar, and he offered him the crown to be the emperor, showing that he trusts his friend to be the leader of many. Brutus was also a close ally and friend to Caesar. Despite his close friendship, Brutus constantly feared Caesar’s ambitions and he did not want him to become the emperor. Brutus ended up not being loyal to Caesar anymore when he learned that Caesar might be the emperor. He gathered up a bunch of conspirators to kill him, showing that Brutus couldn’t be a good friend since he was capable of turning on a friend and even trying to kill them. Mark Antony was always loyal to Caesar. He never turned on Caesar, even through the disorder in their country. By doing this, Mark Antony proved that he could be a good friend or ally to anyone.
