As psychologists we are expected to help those that we can but being sure to also only practice within our scope of competency, barring an emergency. Often times we may be presented with a client whose case is out of our scope of competence, or someone who we do not morally agree with. In this scenario, Brian is facing both dilemmas. He is unfamiliar with a potential client’s culture and lifestyle and is morally opposed to the clients presenting concerns. After his supervisor assigns him some readings to increase his competency, Brian still opposes and wants to transfer cases. However, two of the three members on the evaluation committee have relations with the student. The main ethical violations in this scenario are from multiple relationships. Faculty members A and R know the student on either a personal or academic level and are also reviewing her program placement.
While multiple relations themselves are not unethical, in this circumstance it is unethical for the two faculty members to serve on a committee while they are partial to her continuance in the program. According to the Michigan Department of Community Health: General Psychology rules – D, faculty member R is in violation. She is requesting the student stay until after her own research is complete because she is reliant on the student’s help. Therefore, she is taking advantage of the professional relationship to further her own gain.
Faculty member A knows the student on a personal level and is also her advisor. While she is not requesting the student to stay for her personal gain, she feels as though she knows the student better than the other faculty members and should speak to her character.
