One of the most common medical procedures performed in the United States each year is abortion, the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy. Usually, the last resort of a troubled mother. Taken place the first 28 weeks in pregnancy either illegally or legally in clinics. Some people think that abortion should be illegal, yet some people think otherwise. Abortion is an on-going conflict with very strong opinions about both sides, anti-abortion and pro-abortion. Conflicts like this can help you learn about life and potentially teach you what to do or what not to do in situations like this. The law comes into play in 1973, when Roe v. Wade made it possible for women to terminate their pregnancies for any reason within certain gestational time limits (Redden). This being made, many civilians were against the Supreme Court’s decision of the termination of unborn babies, opposing against it. Religion also took a big toll in this hectic conflict, with some cultures that would choose to save the life of a woman rather than her unborn child. Over one hundred potential complications have been associated with abortion (Reardon). Ranging from physical and emotional drawbacks. Some of the physical effects are, infection, excessive bleeding, embolism, ripping of the uterus, anesthesia complications, convulsions, cervical injury, endotoxic shock, fevers, vomiting, death, etc. (Reardon). From a study of women that had abortions, about 40 to 60 percent had expressed emotional complications within 8 weeks after the abortions, like, 55% expressed guilt, 44% had nervous disorders, 36% had experienced sleep disturbances, 31% had regrets about their decision, and 11% had been prescribed psychotropic medicine by their family doctor (Reardon). Not only this, but abortion has many other effects, like the violent and destructive feud between anti-abortionists and pro-abortionists. These conflicts lead to destruction of abortion clinics and deaths of physicians that perform abortions. Since 1977, when the National Abortion Federation began tracking violence against abortion providers, through 2013, there have been 1,495 acts of vandalism against abortion clinics (Cohen).
