45 years ago, the Supreme Court of the US overruled all laws within the states that prohibited a woman’s rights to an abortion during the first 3 months of pregnancy. The backlash still remains prevalent, with the “March of Life” and other protests. America is divided. But the only way to ensure true freedom is to have the right to choose.
In America, there are an estimated 427,910 children in the foster care system. Only around 22% are adopted (1). To abort a baby does not limit the amount of adoptable children more than it adds to the amount of children without homes. In foster care, children’s lives are often inconsistent (2). David reported that children born of unwanted pregnancies had significant disadvantages, such as being breastfed for shorter periods of time, acute illness and lower grades (5). Children deserve to be born to loving parents who have the means to support them financially, medically, and emotionally. No one knows if they weren’t born, but there is an emotional toll to not being wanted and knowing it. There is also more than just emotional damage to the mother when she cannot have an abortion. There are always risks, as with any medical procedure, but anyone in a clinic is going to be lectured extensively on what they are about to do. Abortion in the first trimester is considered a minor surgery, while the risk increases with age. The highest risk factor is associated with labor induction, with a 5% infection rate (4). As for psychological damage, every woman is different. Some women may feel relief that the procedure is over, others may feel anything from mild regret to depression, some may take only a few days to heal and some may feel it never goes away (5). However, with pregnancy, although the risk is not as great, it is still there. Type in the words “I regret” into the google search bar, and the term “I regret having kids” is the fifth to pop up. “I regret h” brings up 5 results about not wanting children, four being the first results. People regret having children, especially people who were denied abortions. Children change your whole lifestyle, and when people aren’t ready, they can feel regret, depression, and prevent people from reaching their full potential in the workforce or other
