In 1791, the founders of our country added the Second Amendment to the Constitution. “The Second Amendment states that a well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed” (Gun Control Facts). Many citizens and political leaders have come to believe that “we the people” should no longer bear arms. Gun control in the United States is a very controversial topic; however, firearms are necessary in the homes, cars, and purses of the American people. The ability to bear arms will continuously benefit every citizen; however, the White House has plans to limit gun use and many believe that gun control will not work.
“The term gun control as it is used in the United States refers to any action taken by the federal government or by state of local governments to regulate, through legislation, the sale, purchase, safety, and use of handguns and other types of firearms by individual citizens” (EBSCO). With the government restricting gun ownership in the U.S. it is necessary to remind each other that having the right to bear arms benefits the American citizens in several ways. In the past, many of the crimes that have happened involved semiautomatic rifles which allow for multiple shots to be fired with just a pull of the trigger. Some examples of crimes including these firearms are: the Sandy Hook shooting, the movie theatre in Colorado, and the Fort Hood shooting (CNN). All of these murders occurred in the past few years and the individuals who committed these crimes used assault rifles. These are the guns that the government thinks need limited magazines.
