Gun Control Gun control is a very highly controversial topic with many Americans over the years. Every time you hear of an assassination or mass shooting the topic of gun control comes up. Defenders think that gun control will cut down on the violence and that in turn will lead to a safer nation. “Gun control dates back to the to the 18th century when our nations founder’s were drafting the Bill of Rights and people disputed over how to interpret this amendment” (Smith). Gun control laws will only keep the law-abiding citizens from purchasing guns for protection and hunting. Criminals will always find a way and be able to purchase guns from the black market or illegal street sales.
The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (Corso). This amendment has had numerous debated over the right that a citizen of this nation has to own guns. Over the years people have interpreted this amendment in many different ways. Gun control supporters seem to think militia means only during wartime. Guns are very powerful weapons. They can cause harm or even cause death if not used properly. If tougher laws are passed restricting ownership of guns many people will be affected. The criminals will still be able to violate gun laws and they will still carry a gun illegally. It will be much easier to harm an innocent person because they will not be able to protect themselves. An unarmed person stands very little chance of surviving against an armed person. If a criminal is unaware of his next potential victim ownership of a gun he more than likely not commit that
