Arming Teachers: Yes or No?

With school shootings on the rise, is arming teachers really a good idea? We believe that arming teachers would not be the preferable choice to protecting students from school shootings. In fact, the act of arming teachers may be even more detrimental than not arming teachers because there would be an increase in safety problems, a hierarchy which would be built off of fear, and the expense as well as training. As we know, school shootings in the U.S. continue to rise, as well as laws trying to protect students and having more gun control across the country. With the thought of arming teachers, this can decrease safety instead of increase safety. For example, South Dakota has passed the state law allowing teachers to be armed during school hours. “They're making the case that school shootings such as the one Friday in Newtown, Conn., that left 20 small children and six adults dead could be prevented or stopped if some school staffers were armed.” NPR.org states. The Tennessee state passed the law on armed teachers because of the same situation of a school shooter taking the lives of 3 students and 3 adults at an elementary school. “Paul Bailey said, “It’s a good thing. If you are a possible intruder, you don't know if the person you encounter is an authorized faculty or staff member. that maybe will change their mind about coming." So due to the shooting, they want to ensure a safer place for students and teachers who DO want to carry guns. Arming teachers is not the right thing to do in many ways, overall we have to think about the students as well. These students already fear for their safety because of school shootings, bringing the main weapon they fear about at school causing safety problems, fear, and costs would not be the solution and cause these kids to
