Shingles – "Herpes Zoster" A viral infection, caused by the same virus as chickenpox. After chickenpox the virus lies latent in the nerve cells near the spinal cord, before it reactivates and migrates down sensory nerves to the skin. Early signs of shingles are a tingling, burning, sharp pain under the skin followed by a red rash and blisters. It almost always occurs one side of the body only. Other symptoms include feeling unwell, mild fever, headache, enlarged lymph nodes and an upset stomach. Shingles can have complications such as post-herpetic neuralgia which is persisting or reoccurring pain in the same area more than a month after the onset of shingles, muscle weakness, skin infections or organ infections. Infection occurs when bacteria enters the urinary tract, most commonly caused by bacteria that normally live in the bowel such as E-coli. Woman are more at risk of a urinary tract infection as they have shorter urethras. Symptoms include a painful, burning sensation when passing urine, pain in the abdomen or pelvic area, a frequent or constant urge to urinate and cloudy or smelly urine.
