Athletes are intricate, high-performance creatures that supply our country with not only a form of entertainment, but a sense of superiority. While athletes are admired for their strength and determination, most of the United States has yet to realize that right under forty percent of athletes experience symptoms of anxiety, depression, and several forms of worthlessness. One thing that can feed into this never-ending problem is trauma, this serious and in-depth situation continues to affect athletes today and proceeds to only get worse. This is most likely because for most it is their first time away from home, not to mention having to maintain grades, social appearances, social isolation, and more. Around thirty percent of collegiate female athletes and twenty-five percent of male college athletes experience mental conditions. Out of fifty-five percent, only around ten percent, seek the help they need or even talk about the problems they are experiencing in the first place. (American College of Sports Medicine, 2021) Another monumental factor that can affect athletes is past trauma. Trauma is described by the American Psychologist Association as a response to a terrible event, experience, natural disaster, or sexual assault. (American Psychological Association, 2008) Identical to athletes with mental disorders, when a trauma occurs it is common, normal even, for shock and most importantly denial to occur.
