Attack On Pearl Harbor
The attack on pearl harbor was “a date which will end in infamy.” President Franklin Roosevelt said on December 8, 1941, a day after the surprise attack. Japan planned to attack us at our naval base in pearl harbor close to Hawaii on December 7th, 1941.This day will be the start of World War II.
The surprise attack Japan put on us in December 7th, 1941 was a tragic day. The attack started at 7:48 a.m. Pearl Harbor was attacked by 353 imperial Japanese bombers, fighter planes, and torpedo planes. Two waves of planes were launched on 6 aircraft carrier, that’s average of 60-65 planes on each aircraft carrier. First waves second group had 51 Aichi D3A dive bombers armed with 550 lb general purpose bombs. First waves third group had 43 Mitsubishi A6M also known as “Zero” fighters for air control and strafing. The second waves first group had 54 BSNs armed with 550 lb and 132 lb general purpose bombs. 27 of them planes were heading to kaneohe, Ford Island, and Barbers Point, The other half was heading to Hickam Field. The second waves second group had 78 D3As armed with 550 lb general purpose bombs, in four sections and 3 out of four were sent back or aborted. The second waves third group had 35 A6Ms for defense and strafing. The 3rd group was sent to target aircraft at Ford Island, Hickam Field, Wheeler Field, Barber’s Point, Kaneohe, one was aborted. The war lasted about 2 hours which did a number on us but not enough. At 7:53 a.m. the first wave of 186 planes were in the air at pearl harbor, by 8:00 a.m. most of the U.S. fighter planes were destroyed.The second wave arrived with 167 planes by 8:40 a.m. The second wave was supposed to clean up Ford Island, Hickam Field, Wheeler Field, Barber’s Point, and Kaneohe, but didn’t do as much damage as the first. We lost 2,403 people died and 1,187 people were wounded. Aircraft losses were big, the U.S. Navy lost 92, and damaged 31 planes. The U.S. lost 77 and damaged 128 planes. The Japanese on the other hand lost a total of 29 planes. 9 of those planes were fighter planes, 15 were dive bombers, and 5 were torpedo bombers. USS Oklahoma (BB-37), USS West Virginia (BB-48), USS Arizona (BB-39), USS Utah (A6-16), USS Oglala (CM-4), Harbor Tug/ USS Sotoyoma (YT-9) were all sunk. All but two were never repaired and that was USS Arizona and USS Oklahoma. The USS Oklahoma was too old to repair, and the USS Arizona was hit by an armor piercing bomb which ignited the ship's ammunition magazine destroying the ship and also killed 1,177 crewmen. 9 ships were heavily damaged, the USS Helena (CL-50), USS Raleigh (CL-7), USS Cassin (DD-372), USS Downes (DD-375), Vestal, USS California (BB-44), USS Maryland (BB-46), USS Tennessee (BB-43), and the USS Nevada (BB-36. After they were repaired they were sent back to the fleet around
