There is an increasing number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which impacts children in a variety of ways. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a severe developmental disorder that is marked by difficulties in social communications, language, and cognitive abilities (American Psychiatric Association, 2018). According to Center for Disease Control's Autism and Disabilities Monitoring Network, one in 68 children are being identified with ASD's and is becoming more predominant in the society today (2018). The rate of prevalence has nearly doubled in the last 10 years. Research shows that ASD can affect both male and female children, yet, it is seen in more males about 4.5 times. According to CDC and some researchers, ASD can be detected as early as 18 months. They state the earlier the children are identified the better their outcomes will be in the future. The recommendation is to start early intervention as soon as possible with evidence based early intervention procedures (EBEI). Most children with ASD have a hard time managing certain behaviours such as aggression or not being able to follow directions. One of the crucial areas of deficits in children with autism is poor communication skills. It can range from both emotional communication (i.e., recognizing other's emotions or expressing emotions and feelings) or functional communication (i.e., asking for hugs, toys, food). Hence, it is important to start providing early supports in these areas. Moreover, there are plenty of techniques, interventions and strategies used to treat communication deficits in children with autism. Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) is one of the well-established treatments for ASD and it is widely used.
