However all the children may have all the characteristics or some. According to Smith (2007) stated that characteristics of autism can present themselves in a wide variety of combinations, from mild to severe. Characteristics found in ASD children have seemed in early ages. However, they may improve slowly as the child develops. Usually children with autism have deficiencies in both verbal and non-verbal communication. Their language develops slowly or not at all and they have very short attention spans. They often lack social skills and will spend time alone, rather than with others. In more severe cases, children have unusual reactions to physical senses such as being overly sensitive to touch or under responsive to pain. PECS are used to communicate a request, a thought. Can use at home or in school. The main goal of PECS is to teach with autism a fast self-initiating functional communication system. PECS can be used as single word systems to describe something a child wants and generalized over many situations. According to Bondy and Frost (n.d.) children are taught to exchange a single picture for a desired item and eventually to construct picture-based sentences and use a variety of attributes in their request. PECS assist children with making choices between two or more favourite activities or items, and may also assist them in describing their feelings, by choosing a mood card such as a sad face, to describe how they are feeling.
