Nurses are taught to provide patient autonomy according to Keatings & Smith is described as “founded on respect for persons, based on the notion that human beings have worth and moral dignity not possessed by other creatures. All human beings should be respected.” (Keatings&Smith 2010) However, in this case study Walter does not possess the true meaning of autonomy by not properly informing his patients of the risks of this new study. It does not explain if the patients were properly informed of the chance of being given traditional analgesics or being randomized into a group that could receive the new analgesic. Although the patient consent form is signed, the patients have not been given proper education of the risks of this new drug or the fact this drug has not been tested on thoracic surgery patients. In this case Wayne does not have respect for patient worth as this is an extremely high risk and he has informed Juanita that she “likely knows as much as he does about the drug, as he …show more content…
(Keatings&Smith, 2010) Which breaks off into further theories, in this case study the Act Deontologist would relate due to the fact that an individual in any situation should be able to immediately grasp what should be done without the need to rely on any other people in the situation. (Keatings&Smith, 2010) As we realize, Juanita is experiencing an ethical dilemma regarding if she should inform something of her colleagues “new study” that is being completed on the floor that can be putting patients in harms ways with their pain control post surgery, if the patient is fully aware of the study that is being completed and they are being put into a randomized list with the chance to be chosen to use a new drug that has never been used post operatively for the type of surgery the will be having completed. The most evident ethical dilemma is that Wayne is not completing this study for the greater good of the patient, rather for the greater good of himself and a little extra money on the side being part of a study he happens to be a part of outside of work and is now bringing this to a floor he is employed on, in my opinion is wrong. Wayne has barely researched this medication and is now incorporating his outside “hobby” with the real life
