On January 26, 2008 my mother and I came to the United States for the first time from the Philippines. Becoming a U.S. citizen is not as easy as you think. It started with when my mom marrying my dad. Within three months of my mom marrying my dad, who is a U.S. citizen. That titled me to a temporarily permanent resident card(Green card). A Green card allows you to stay in the country for up to two years. Within that time period, my mother and I had to apply for a U.S. permanent card. This permanent card can last up to ten years. The oath includes numerous promises when becoming a U.S. citizen. The promises are, to give up allegiance to other nations, swear an allegiance to the United States, serve the country when needed, support and defend the United States laws and the Constitution. Being a U.S. citizen to me, means a lot because my parents and I always travel. If I was a U.S. citizen, I would be able to travel to one hundred seventy-two countries without applying for a visa. For example, a Green card holder would have to apply for many visas because the card is only limited for two years. On the other hand, a permanent card can last up to ten years, which would be better than getting a Green card. If my parents would apply me to become a U.S. citizen, my parents would have to pay a fine of six-hundred dollars. There are many requirements my parents would need to do. My mom applied her citizenship when I was twelve years old. Since my visa is attached to my mom's visa, as soon as my mom received her citizenship, I am technically a U.S. citizen. Unfortunately my mom has to apply a certificate of naturalization.
