We live in a society that claims to embrace individual liberty and rights, believing each individual has the freedom of making choices. However, this also evoke the debate over whether government-run national service should be mandatory to fulfill obligated civic responsibilities with the rights that Americans are given. The belief that national service is an obligation of all Americans is unethical as mandatory national service would ultimately violate fundamental principles of individual liberty. An individual has the right to determine their own actions, and should have the right of choosing any ways to give back to the community and how to prioritize their time instead of being commanded to participate in a government-funded national service.
