”Love your enemies, for they tell you your faults.” -Benjamin Franklin (Kozeck). Benjamin Franklin was an American hero whose legacy can still be seen today. As a printer he published many quotes including “He that lies down with dogs shall rise up with fleas (Kozeck).” His kite experiment proved him as a scientist. He was a founding father and signed the Declaration of Independence, and founded many organizations that are still around today, including the University of Pennsylvania (“Benjamin Franklin Historical Society”). All of his accomplishments show that trial, “energy, and persistence conquer all things (Kozeck).”

(Franklin 25) He finally found work for a printer named Samuel Keimer (Franklin 27). The next year, Franklin returned to Boston with silver and a watch (Franklin 29). His friends and family were all very excited to see him, except his brother James, who could not forgive him for what he did (Franklin 29). Soon after Franklin returned to Philadelphia, he left the city when governor William Keith told him that he would pay for his passage to London where money would be waiting and he would increase his printing experience; he also promised that he would pay for his voyage back to Philadelphia (“Benjamin Franklin Historical Society”). After making some promises to Deborah Read, Franklin left for London. When Franklin got to London, nobody had heard that the governor had given him any money (“Benjamin Franklin Historical Society”). Franklin realized he had been tricked; he wrote a letter to Deborah Read saying he would not be returning anytime soon (“Benjamin Franklin Historical Society”). When Franklin complained about them making his hands and feet sore, he tried to find a new way to swim faster using a kite. Franklin would lie on his back and hold on to a kite, which pulled him effortlessly along the water, similar to kitesurfing. (“Benjamin Franklin Historical Society”) Franklin loved reading and had tons of books on high bookshelves so he invented the long-arm for reaching books on high shelves. Like many people, Franklin’s eyesight grew worse as he aged, and he got annoyed with having to switch from reading glasses to distance glasses. So Franklin invented bifocals, glasses with both reading lenses as well as distance lenses, so he didn’t have to switch back and forth all the time. However, Franklin said that of all his inventions, the one that pleased him the most was the glass armonica. The glass armonica is a musical instrument where the player pushes a pedal with his foot, rotating all thirty-six glass bowls, and rubbing wet fingers on the glass.
