RESEARCH REPORT:

THE BUILDING OF THE BERLIN WALL (1961)

I decided to conduct my research report on the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961. I chose this topic because of my interest in German history and my desire to find out more about the division between East and West Berlin from 1961 - 1989.

BEFORE THE WALL WAS ERECTED
In the months leading up to the building of the Berlin Wall, there were many rumours that Berlin would be divided by a wall being built at the East/West Berlin border.
On June 15, 1961, the first German/American Volksfest was held; at time for two nations to come together and celebrate their close relationship.

Border police and combat workers from the East were responsible for this and West Berliners were shocked to find the emplacements there. There was an immediate uproar as people were turned away from crossing the border. People could not go to work and families were split apart.

Over the next few days and weeks, the barbed wire was replaced with bricks and cobblestones. The entire wall now stretched 43 kilometres through Berlin and was getting longer and stronger everyday. Many people were injured and even killed by border police for attempting to cross the border.
Protests kicked off with West Berliners claiming they were “completely innocent”. They argued that the GDR (an East Berlin organisation) were to blame for splitting the city in two.

As time went on, the the death toll rose to a whopping 136 and the Wall became known as the ‘Death Strip’. Secret meetings were being held all the time between border offices and the GDR, and the protests were spinning out of control. At the time, surrounding Germans were calling it a civil
