Daniel battled with alternating feelings of extreme sadness and exceeding happiness from one moment to the next. At first, he couldn’t understand what was wrong with him. He just knew that he wanted it to stop. The depression came upon him unexpectedly- one minute he was the life of the party- getting high on everything and anything. And the next he was hurdled up in bed, his door shut tight, pillow over his head as his “demons” raked through every cell of his body. The depression felt real, like a heavy, damp cloak was pressing him down- taking all of the light and life of his soul. His friends began to complain about how much he talked, how he was always so willing to get into bar fights and beat people up. All the ladies he tried to date soon took off when they found out how “weird” he could get. One day, he locked himself up in his room and put a gun to his mouth.. It was months after his death that his friends realized what was wrong with him. He had been battling with Bipolar disorder- a form of mental disorder. “A mental disorder is a syndrome characterized by clinically significant disturbance in an individual's cognition, emotion regulation, or behavior that reflects a dysfunction in the psychological, biological, or developmental processes underlying mental functioning (Maisel, 2013). It is also called manic-depressive illness or manic depression. People with bipolar disorder go through unusual mood changes. Sometimes they feel very happy and “up,” and are much more energetic and active than usual. This is called a manic episode. Sometimes people with bipolar disorder feel very sad and “down,” have low energy, and are much less active. This is called depression or a depressive episode”. Bipolar disorder should not be confused with the normal mood swings everyone experiences every once in a while. In cases of bipolar, The mood swings are much more severe and are usually accompanied by changes in energy level, sleep, and the ability to think clearly. Like every other mental disorder, it affects the sufferer's social life and interpersonal relationships. People with Bipolar Disorder can be very difficult to understand by friends and family as one moment they are extremely active and the next, they just want to be left alone. This means that they get offended and agitated easily and could go as far as bringing harm on anyone who crosses them. They are also prone to lead very risky lives like being extremely amorous without giving a thought to using protection during intimacy with their lovers and could be very reckless spenders. They could also dampen the mood of the people around them during their depressive episodes. They are also very likely to be bad
