The non-fictional person is a boy named Salva at a young age, he has to flee his home in Southern Sudan because of war and walks for many miles and years to find a safer place. In the book it talks his time in two refugee camps. In the book it says,"The local people who lived in the area did not like having the refugee camp nearby. They would often sneak in and steal from the refugees. Sometimes fights broke out, and people were hurt or killed. After two years of misery at Kakuma, Salva decided to leave the camp." (Park 98) He had gone through a lot to get there, some friends had died on the way. All of this just to get to somewhere safe, but what was considered a safe place he decided to leave because of the condition of the camp. After this he went to a different refugee camp, but had similar difficulties. The text says, "Everyone was always hungry, and there was never enough food. Many were sick or had gotten injured during their long, terrible journeys to reach the camp"(Park 99) No matter where Salva was the conditions were horrible and there was never enough help. Salva says, "There was nothing to do but wait—wait for the next meal....It was hard to keep hope alive when there was so little to feed it."(Park 99) In this part of the book it says that Salva was fortunate enough to not have any grievous injuries at this point, but that many people were not so lucky. Even though Salva has no injuries, he is losing hope, and hope is what keeps people going. When we do not have hope we really have nothing that helps us move forward. We are stuck until we can find something to motivate us and without hope we can't find anything to motivate
