The book is narrated by three main characters; Skeeter, Aibileen and Minny. The movie is a little bit different. Skeeter, Aibileen and Minny are the main characters just like the book but the film doesn’t have as much narration. You will hear the three main character’s thoughts here and there but the film is mostly run on dialogues exchanged between characters. The film however doesn’t and cannot go as deeply into the character’s thoughts. In the book we got to know the three main characters more because it was narrated from their aspect and therefore we know what they were thinking and saying at all times. Why do you think changes were made?
In my opinion the movie stayed pretty faithful to the book, however the movie felt a bit undeveloped. It is understandable that the movie can never be as deep as the book but I feel that too many important parts were left out. Many significant parts that were included in the film were changed from the novel. The “high-angle” was used a few of times, it is when the camera looks down upon a subject or character. This allows the audience to see the setting the characters are in, and where they’re heading. For example in the last scene, when Aibileen is walking away from Elizabeth’s house the “high-angle” gives you the ability to see the neighbourhood of Jackson. The use of this angel seemed to give a sense of hope, I believe this effect is achieved because the angle shows the symbolic “road a head” as she walks into her new life. The “birds eye view-angle” was used a couple times, one time being when Skeeter was in her car driving away from her house and again when Hilly was driving to Skeeters for a fight. This type of angle is used to show a broad view of the farm and their surroundings. In my opinion a combination of camera, shots and angles made this story come to
