Washington was born on April 5, 1856 to an unknown white father and black slave women (“Flashfocus…). The location of his birth is on a plantation farm in Virginia (“Delving Deeper” 251). On the plantation they lived in a small cabin (Davis 27). After the Thirteenth Amendment was passed, he moved from the plantation to Malden, West Virginia with his family (“Flashfocus…”). While in Malden he started working in salt and coal mines at the young age of 10 (“Delving Deeper” 251). He also received his first bit of education while he was living in Malden (deGregory).
