African American slaves' daily lives consisted of merciless brutality, not only physical, but mental as well, at the hands of their enslavers. The image shown of Peter's scarred back shows the relentless beatings and whippings experienced by African American slaves during the time. Not only beatings, but they also experienced genital mutilation, branding, and many other torture tactics intended to assert authority and insert fear. This mental and physical brutality was used to dehumanize and rule the African American people at the time, making sure to continuously reiterate who was in power.
