Progressive Changes that Shaped Today
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV) The events that happened during the Progressive era (1900-1920s) transformed the American people politically culturally, and economically in a positive way. If it wasn’t for these changes our country wouldn’t be as strong as it is today. Education becomes more of a priority and journalism (Muckruckers) exposes political corruption, poor living conditions, unhealthy work environments, and much more. There was a demand for gender equality as well as more interest in government and its officials.

Women having a voice or a choice in anything other than matters of the home was unheard of before the woman’s movement. By 1890, the National Woman’s Suffrage Association argued that woman had a right to vote not because they were like men, but because they were not like men. They could make their domesticity into a political virtue, using the franchise to create a purer, more moral “maternal commonwealth.” (Hansan, J.) Today, young ladies are growing up knowing they can be anything they want to be.
