In today's society, poverty has become a very prevalent issue that affects the lives of people from all walks of life. Although many organizations have been created to decrease the amount of people in poverty nothing can completely save our society from poverty. Poverty is defined as the state of being extremely poor. Over the past 40 years one in six newborns were born into poverty and nearly half remained poor half their childhoods (Balter). Poor children are nearly ninety percent more likely than non poverty-stricken children to enter their twenties without completing high school and are four times more likely to give birth without marriage during their teenage years (Engle). Poverty is the worst issue that has ever existed, poverty creates conditions that favor the spread of infectious diseases an example of a disease that has affected many people in areas of poverty is the Flu. In the United States alone, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that over 200,000 people are hospitalized each year with the flu. Over 36,000 people die many of those who don't live in areas of poverty (APA). Poverty is costing our country five hundred billion per year in lost productivity (Strauss). Year after year, the lost productivity and extra health costs associated with it add up to nearly half a trillion dollars which hurts our economy tremendously(Strauss). The is a substantial amount of money coming out of the pocket of U.S taxpayers pocket that could be used for something more important. Due to the excessive lost in productivity, we can never measure the countless innovations and discoveries that did not occur for our nation; due to poverty.
