Chris McCandless is a man known for leaving his home and going on a journey. Many think of Chris's journey and where he traveled to, but not many question why he did leave. It was told by his siblings that it was caused by home problems between their parents in the household, his parents say it was because of his inner ambitions of traveling and being independent and journeying. The verbal abuse towards Chris when he was young was one of the factors his siblings say that made him feel the need to leave. Chris was born into an abusive household, his father living a double life of having two families. Putting all the blame on a child just because the mother was selfish and didn't want to give up her lifestyle. The parents this very day still deny the truth, that their problems forced their child to leave, pretty much the death of their own child. I truly feel that they drove him away, there were many instances when their mother would call the names of her children just for her children to watch and to be filled with discomfort for their childhood. The fact that a child felt such discomfort in their own home is terrible, the mother and father can't even admit their own fault for what happened to Chris. Trying to create a narrative that it's his own doing and no reasoning besides himself. Chris’s father talks about their children now and how they’re missed dearly, but then says “We’d forgive them in an instant and vice versa.(Swerer Jr). As if their children did anything wrong, all they did was admit the truth of what really happened. 22 years later and there still holding grudges, which shows another reason why Chris left and there are most likely many more that haven't been told or discovered yet.
