Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a disease that affects a person's brain. For many years, claims linking the illness to football have been denied by the National Football League (NFL). However, going with the number of football players who suffer from this disease, it is impossible to ignore the fact that football could be linked to CTE. An article by Gregory published by TIME magazine shows that 90% of football players suffer from brain disease. The figure shows the magnitude of risk associated with the sport. In other words, majority of all players are likely to suffer from CTE. Going by that report, it would imply that thousands of young people suffer from CTE disease every year (Omalu et al. 17). It occurs when an individual is hit on the head, as a result of a concussion. It is in common knowledge that head injuries occurs more often than not in football. The nature of the game requires the use of force which in most cases results to a concussion. When the concussions occur and leaves the victim conscious, he or she is exposed to the risk of CTE. However, the disease does not only affect football players; other games such as boxing and rugby are also reported to have their players affected. . Jeff Miller, asserted that there is a link between CTE and football (Farmer and Fenno). It was held that the statement by Miller was a reflection of the stand of the NFL. Some of the detailed researches that connect football to CTE are those conducted at the Boston University. According to a memo released by the NFL, researchers at the Boston University explicated their findings after years of study by affirming that many retired players are diagnosed with CTE (Glenza). The researches were carried out following the death of the players, with the NFL funding most of them at the Boston University. The memo also noted that the NFL locker rooms display warning to the players informing them on the dangers of concussions and brain injuries. This is evidence that even the NFL admits that the game puts the players at risk of sustaining long-term injuries. It also informs the players that it is their responsibility to protect themselves and fellow players from sustaining head injuries by practicing ‘safe moves’ on the field.
