Over the past couple weeks we have been learning about the causes of the Civil War. Some events where Slavery, The Tariff Issue, the Texas Annexation, and many more. But I believe the cause of the Civil War are 2 different events. These events are the Missouri Compromise and Bleeding Kansas.

The first event I think caused the Civil War is the Missouri Compromise. The Missouri Compromise happened in 1820 and was an effort by the Congress to make half the states free of slaves and have the states with slaves. So they came up with the 36-30 line. The 36-30 line split the country in the middle. All the states under the line where slave states, and all states above the line where free states. By doing this the Congress wanted to end the slavery …show more content…
Bleeding Kansas is a very unique name. It is a term used to described the period of violence during the settling of the Kansas territory. In 1854 the Kansas-Nebraska Act overturned the Missouri Compromise, using popular sovereignty, decided that the residents would determine whether the area became a free state or a slave state. First, there was a movement called The Sack of Lawrence. Amos Lawrence and a group of anti-slavery people road in to Kansas and destroyed the town of Lawrence. They proceeded to destroy two newspaper offices as they threw the printing presses from the Free-Soil newspaper into the nearby river. They burned and looted homes and shops. As a final message to Abolitionists, they aimed their cannons at the Free State Hotel and smashed it into oblivion. This caused more fighting. Next was amovement called the Pottawatomie Creek Massacre which occurred three days after the Sack of Lawrence. At Pottawatomie Creek, five abolitionist men were dragged from their cabins and massacred by John Brown and his sons. One by one, Brown's group dragged out helpless victims and hacked at their heads with the broadswords. John Brown was a very wanted man and had many search parties out for him. But it wasn’t the last of him. The sack of Lawrence and the Massacre at Pottawatomie Creek set off a brutal war in Kansas. By the end of 1856, over 200 people would be gunned down in cold blood. Property damage reached millions of dollars. Federal troops were sent in to put down the fighting. I believe Bleeding Kasas was another major event that caused the Civil
