They were given trivial jobs. After the Fall of the Alamo, the rangers gathered cattle and evacuated refugees away from the Alamo. They served similar roles through out the war. One famous Texas Ranger was John Coffee Hays. John was born in Tennessee, but he moved to San Antonio after Texas gained independence from Mexico. In 1841, at age 23 John was promoted to Ranger captain. John achieved his fame from protecting Texas from both Comanche and Mexican raids. John defended the U.S. supply/communication chains during the Mexican War. If those chains were to break, then Mexico could have won the war. After his career being a ranger ended, John went on to have a career in politics. Another famous Texas Ranger was Samuel H. Walker. Samuel and other rangers were often outnumbered, but they held their ground against Native Americans and Mexican raiders. Samuel Walker joined Hay’s Ranger Company in 1844. At the battle of Walker’s creek, Samuel and 14 other Texas Rangers fought against 80 Comanche. The Texas Rangers came out victorious, but Walker was wounded. Walker made a recovery and became a Ranger Captain. Walker was killed by Mexican forces at Humantla in October
