Clara Barton was born on December 25, 1821, in Oxford, Massachusetts. She was the youngest of four children. Her father was a war captain and her mother stayed at home mom and taught Clara how to cook and sew. Her sisters Sally and Dorothy taught her how to read. Stephen, her older brother taught her how to do math and her oldest brother, David, taught her how to do everything else, such as, ride horses, balance, and take care of animals. When she was four she was enrolled into Colonel Richard Stone’s school but Clara was super shy and she didn’t ever make friends. When she was eight years old her parents put her in boarding school to try and help her become less shy but that just made it worse.
